4 Winter Apartment Cleaning Tips

How to Clean and Organize Your Apartment this Winter

If cabin fever has you feeling down in the dumps during the winter season, you should definitely take a shot at cleaning your apartment. It’s like killing two birds with one stone: You’ll give yourself something productive to do while keeping busy and simultaneously create a cleaner space for you to spend time in. This winter season, take advantage of the chilly weather and the extra time spent inside with these easy-to-follow winter apartment cleaning tips:

1. Maintain the apartment’s entryway.

Snow, rain, hail, slush and other forms of winter weather can make it pretty hard to keep an apartment clean. In fact, it can almost make it seem impossible. The trick to keeping your apartment completely clear of snow-filled, wet footprints is easy, though – all you need to do is maintain your apartment’s entryway. Be sure to lay out a large water-proof indoor doormat, so that you can wipe away any snow, slush or wetness as soon as you walk in the door. A boot scraper can also be placed in the entryway, for those days when your shoes are extra dirty. A coat rack can be hung as well, so that hats, gloves, scarves and jackets can be organized in a neat and cohesive way, instead of piling them around the apartment and causing extra clutter.

2. Clean the windows.

It might not be the first thing you think of, but the windows in your apartment should be taken into serious consideration while cleaning your apartment during the winter. The reason? Windows are easily susceptible to a thick, filmy coat of residue during the months of winter, making your windows difficult to see out of. While you can purchase a window cleaner or glass cleaner at a local supermarket or retailer, you can also create a homemade solution that will sanitize your windows just as thoroughly. Combine white vinegar, dish detergent and water together in a bowl, and stir well. Then, use a microfiber cloth to polish the windows from top to bottom.

3. Rotate and disinfect the mattresses.

Sure, it’s easy to wash sheets, pillow cases and bedding – but the mattress is something that barely gets paid any mind. If the thought of sleeping on a dirty mattress repulses you in any way, there’s no time like the winter to finally give it the proper cleaning and TLC it deserves. First, remove all of the bedding from the mattress. Recruit a family member, friend or roommate to help you, and rotate the mattress until the former top side is now resting at the bottom portion of the bed frame. Then, using the hose of your vacuum, take the time to vacuum the mattress – you’ll be surprised at how many crumbs and other unwanted particles have found their way onto the material. Even though flipping mattresses used to be a necessary part of the mattress upkeep process, newer products currently being sold do not require it.

4. Reorganize the kitchen.

Even if your apartment boasts a spacious floor plan, every single kitchen is bound to become cluttered from time to time, regardless of its size. While you’re stuck indoors during a winter snowstorm, or if plans get cancelled due to unsafe driving conditions, use that newfound time to reorganize all of the appliances in your kitchen. Chances are, your utensils, pots, pans, Tupperware and containers can all be wrangled and stashed in a more cohesive way. The winter season is also a great time to clean out the refrigerator and freezer in your apartment, as well as your pantry and kitchen cupboards. Once you’ve thrown out all of the expired food products and beverages, organize the remaining items using a system that works well for you and for those who live with you.
